Taking Baby Steps into the World of CD...

No, no, no, no... not this type of CD...

The CD I'm talking about is Cloth Diaper.

Yes, I'm finally taking my small baby steps into the world of Cloth Diapering.

I have been thinking about giving it a try for sometime already but everytime I scout around on the Internet, I get more and more confused reading all the jargons associated with CD. Inserts? Microfibers? AIO? AI2? I just gave up and continue using disposable diapers for Ben.

Of course I do feel the guilt whenever I throw his disposable diapers, thinking of the environmental effect and all. Not to mention the money we could've save if we use CD instead.

We are blessed (really!) with the fact that Ben does not have any sensitive skin or issues with any sorts of diapers. We use one of the cheapest disposable brands around and I regularly changed his diapers every 2-3 hours (or faster if he poop or I felt the diaper is heavy).

Over time, I got to thinking maybe I should give it a try again, to research and be patient more and add on to the fact that our Spicy Baby is coming soon in less than 3 months time and I'm pretty confident with Ben's poop and pee schedule (so I know when to put him into a CD).

I'd like to thank my SAHM friend (that's you Catheryn!) for recommending this CD brand and website to me. The initial starter pack she recommended to me is out of stock and after literally reading everything on the website for days (not kidding you!), I decided to order these two AIO (aka All-In-One) CD to try on Ben and am now in the midst of waiting for it to arrive. If everything is fine and dandy, I'll be getting more of these and use it for Spicy Baby as well.

Why I decided to get the above CDs?

* It's a one size diaper suitable for 0-3 years old
* It is waterproof outside
* It comes with bamboo inserts ( I understand bamboo is better?)
* Most important point is it has a back button which allow Insert to be attached to the CD firmly.
* Another plus point is it has this extended long Velcro in the front side (I'm not a fan of buttons for diapers)

My plan on using the CD is as follow (for now):

* To use during daytime ( I mean, I only bought 2 to try out... so start small right?)
* To place insert on the diaper instead of inserting it into the pocket (so that I can reuse the diaper pants if it's not soiled/soaked through)
* To handwash it myself (reason being we normally pile up our laundry for 2-3 days before we uses the washing machine)
* To get a small bottle of Pureen H-A-D (Pureen Hypo-Allergenic-Detergent) for the CD
* To get some nappy liners (for the poop)

So in the meantime, any recommended websites I should check out or any ideas and/or tips that you can share with me that I should take note of in matters pertaining to CD?

Oh, and good luck to me & Ben! Wink

Hey! You are welcome!

I am glad CD is coming into your life and I hope you will find them useful.  Great way to same some $ $ $ and to be green, in small ways.

Mommy Psedornna

I bought the first CD for my boy when he was 6 months and 2 extra on his first birthday. On my boy 13 months, I no need to buy any disposable diaper as he is potty trained during day time and used 1 CD everynight.

CD really save a lot of money! I think this is most important point for me to proof to my husband that I made a good investment in CD even I just bought 3.

But I strongly not agree to do the following statement:-
* To handwash it myself (reason being we normally pile up our laundry for 2-3 days before we uses the washing machine)

As I did the same intially. After washing for a few time, my boy was sensitive to the CD, where his skin was red and itchy after putting on the CD. Then I was adviced to put in the washing machine instead of hand washing. As our hands can't really do the rinsing as well as washing machine. The detergent remain in the CD that cause his skin to sensitive.

This is my experience to share with you and hope it works for you my dear blogger ^_^

Camille

I'll have to stay tuned to see how these work out for you. I want to use cloth for our next baby but no idea where to start!

Miki

Great news there !

Mommy Psedornna, thanks for the info. i initially handwash all my CD because i'm also washing my laundry 2-3 days once. And you're rite my son got rashes and i tot it was his sensitive skin! Thanks.

I was only using 1 bumwear when I had my boy. The cover itself cost me RM 56. So sum thong. When I had my girl I bought coolababy from e-bay. Cheap rm250 for 10 pul covers and 20 microfiber inserts. I find it okay but you have to strip wash the inserts about 3-4 months once coz it can get quite stinky if you don't. Then I also got 2nd hand bumwear from everythingbabything. Then my friend gave me her 2 bumgenius. If you don't mind spending a little more, the fitted ones are better (more breathable) according to a friend of mine who is full time CD-ing her girl. Happy trying!

Hey Jenny,

Welcome to the CD club! Smile

I have been using Autumz & Gifts from Heavens brands. They are affordable & so far, seems very ok. Autumz cost about RM35 per set with 2 inserts & GFH is approx. RM27 per set with 2 inserts.

Hope you'll enjoy your CD-ing journey too!

Hey Catheryn!
Hopefully things will work out la! Very scared to start now.. nervous, nervous!

Hey Mommy Psedornna!
Thank you very much for your tips! I'll see how it goes cos it's not that convenient to use the washing machine for the diapers - my MIL is quite particular with the laundry loads too (must separate by male/female clothings, working/casual, colors, type etc etc)

Hi Camille!
Ok, ok wish me luck! I hope I'm off to a great start! Tong

Hey Miki!
So now you also put into washing machine?

Hey Germaine!
Thank you for sharing those links. Am checking them out now! Smile

Hey Tracy!
Ish, don't welcome so fast yet, haven't even start anything. I just received the CD today and am very nervous to start the pre-wash part... scared to do it wrongly! Tong

Tracy

Hey Jenny,

I understand that we have to use certain brands of washing detergent to ensure that our CDs last long. I'm using NappiKleen currently & so far, my CDs seems ok.

You just need to wash 2-3 times before using them. I'm sure there'll some leakage for the first few times because the absorbancy is not effective yet. Happy washing!!

Brownie.Kiss

This is something I definitely want to give a try when I become a mommy myself.  I am still grossed out by the thought of hand-washing a poopie diaper, but I will eventually not have a problem with it...hopefully. And I am encouraged by the idea of saving the environment in any small way I can Smile

Hi Tracy,

We used Nappikleen back in the old days when Ben was a newborn, but not so anymore... it was more for his newborn clothings actually.

Anyway, I checked out Nappikleen ysday at Tesco and saw that it contains enzyme and it was mentioned in the website where I bought the CD

"please avoid any detergent containing bleach, whiteners, softener or enzymes. Be aware that most of the baby clothing detergent is not recommended as they usually contain enzymes or brighteners which will leave a residue on diapers and affecting their absorbency rate."

Hi Brownie.Kiss!
Thanks for your comment! I am just stepping into this CD world so it is all new to me still! And don't worry abou the poop and all... when you become a mother, nothing seems gross... hahaha...

Tracy

Yea, I heard that NappyKleen is not good for CDs but I can't afford to be buying another claners just for CD alone. I'll probably consider some other cleaner soon.

You have any ideas on the brands?

Jenny @ I'm a full-time mummy

Hi Tracy!

I just bought Pureen H-A-D, it was highly recommended in the website where I bought the CD from and had read lots of good reviews of it from the net too. Took me few days and tons of baby stores to finally found it at Babyland SS2. Price is RM16.90

Tracy

Thanks Jenny! I'm going to get one soon too.

I'm saying bye to my NappiKleen.kekeke...

Jenny @ I'm a full-time mummy

Hi Tracy!
Hope you can find it la. I look for days for it! Tong

MieVee @ MummysReviews.com

Great that you're taking the step to cloth diapering! Smile

The risk about handwashing is detergent residue that would lead to leaks and/or rashes, so got to rinse VERY thoroughly.

There's simply too much to share, so feel free to hop over to my category on CD-ing at

All the best! Smile
