Potty Training Updates on Both Kiddos...

~ Posted on Thursday, August 8, 2013 at 7:20 AM ~

It's been over half a year since I last blogged about my 2 kiddos' potty training progress!

Just a brief history for all of you who are new to my blog, I blogged about starting Ben back on his potty training in February 2012 after months of delaying it (Alyson came along in September 2011 and I had to pause Ben's potty training since then) and even listed down some short, medium and long terms goals that I looked forward to accomplishing with Ben. Then I also blogged about the precious sight I get to see - Ben finally pooping in his potty! (instead of diapers which he always insisted on), and revisiting those goals I set in February 2012 against the progress in early May 2012 and checking off the ones we achieved 3 weeks later, and now...

Just to report, our 4 years old boy now is officially pooping on his own in the toilet seat without needing our help at all. He just climbs up a chair, switched on the bathroom light (at night), get his step stool and positions himself nicely on the toilet seat and does his business. I do still need to help wash his bum after he finishes his business though. Hubby does not feel confident with our boy washing his own bum yet though I did teach Benjamin to do that sometime ago.

As for bedtime, if I sleep late or I woke up halfway or I woke up early, I will get my boy (still asleep) to pee in his potty - but provided I remembered him drinking more liquid prior to his bedtime. So far, no bedwetting incidents even though we missed waking up in the middle of the night to get him to pee.

As for our almost 2 years old girl, she can sit on the toilet seat to poop and she also indicates to us correctly a couple of times when she feels like want to poop! There are a few cases where it is wrong timing, I rushed to prop her up in the toilet seat, and nothing comes out, put back diaper for her and voila.. poop came... but at least, those few missed cases, she did tell us she wants to poop! As for starting her on potty training, oh well, I think it is not the right time especially when I'm pregnant with our 3rd child now.

I remembered rushing to start our boy with his potty training while I was 8 months pregnant with Alyson and oh boy, not very fun though I did managed to get Benjamin comfortable with being near his potty. I think Alyson will have no problem picking up potty training especially with her able to see her brother going to toilet with ease and all.

So there you go, looks like we are getting almost all of the goals soon for Benjamin and Alyson is progressing well (at her own pace too)! Thank God for this and for our dear boy to be so good in passing his potty training! Mummy and daddy are so proud of you both, Benjamin & Alyson!

Goals Set in Dec 2012

Updates in 4th Jan 2013

(46 months old)

Updates in 14th Feb 2013

(47 months old)

Short Term: To move on to peeing into the toilet seat Completed! There are few times I forgot to put the toilet seat up, so my boy ended up peeing into the drain hole next to our toilet seat (which he then washes off by pouring a bucket of water on the floor) but otherwise, he will go for toilet seat.

Success!

Medium Term: To go diaper-free during his afternoon naptime after the above goal is met

Completed! It has been over a month since my boy last wore a diaper for his afternoon nap.

Success!
Long Term: To poop in the toilet seat

I've been prepping my boy up for this, telling him gently to try pooping in the toilet seat instead of his trusted potty. Waiting for the right moment to do this... stay tuned!

Success! My almost 4 years old boy has so far pooped 3 times in the toilet seat (could be more but I was really not able to accompany him as I had to take care of Alyson at the same time)
Long Term: To go diaper-free during his bedtime Completed! It has been 3 weeks since my boy last wore a diaper for his bedtime. Success! It has been more than 2 months since my boy last wore a diaper for his bedtime.

My major achievement for my boy's potty training is getting him to poo in the toilet seat. I felt so proud and it's like a big burden lifted the first time he sat on the toilet seat and poop. He was scared (said he scared to fall into the toilet seat) but the moment he sat on the toilet seat, he told me 'Mummy, I'm not scared. God protect me like how He protects David when he fights with Goliath!'.

As for bedtime, if I sleep late or I woke up halfway or I woke up early, I will get my boy (still asleep) to pee in his potty. There are 2 occasions where he wet the bed and we don't make a big fuss out of it because my boy had quite a lot of water before his sleep during the 2 occasions and I forgot to wake up halfway to get him to pee.

As for my 17 months old girl, oh wow, having your older child reaching his milestones and the younger one quietly observing everything helps make potty training so much easier and faster! My girl sat on the toilet seat to poop few days back for the first time and does not look scared at all, following the footsteps of her brother I guess!

So there you go, looks like we are getting almost all of the goals soon for Benjamin and Alyson is progressing well (at her own pace too)! Thank God for this and for my dear boy to be so good in following through his potty training!

We are all so proud of you both, Benjamin & Alyson!

Short Term: To move on to peeing into the toilet seat

Completed!

Ben is able to pee into the toilet seat nowadays!

Completed! There are few times I forgot to put the toilet seat up, so my boy ended up peeing into the drain hole next to our toilet seat (which he then washes off by pouring a bucket of water on the floor) but otherwise, he will go for toilet seat.

Medium Term: To go diaper-free during his afternoon naptime after the above goal is met

Achievable!

Completed! It has been over a month since my boy last wore a diaper for his afternoon nap.
Long Term: To poop in the toilet seat

Achievable!

I've been prepping my boy up for this, telling him gently to try pooping in the toilet seat instead of his trusted potty. Waiting for the right moment to do this... stay tuned!
Long Term: To go diaper-free during his bedtime To try this task soon... Completed! It has been 3 weeks since my boy last wore a diaper for his bedtime.

About the night time potty training, how I started this off is to observe few nights, gently asking my boy whether he wants to try going to sleep without his diaper and the first time he said 'Yeah!', I was so thrilled! I told him if he can sleep through the night without any accidents, mummy will tell daddy the next morning and daddy will surely go 'Whoaaaaa!' and the next morning, we woke up and yes, no accidents at all. I immediately ran with my boy to his daddy (he's up earlier and working next door) and broke the news. Daddy knowing our plan immediately went 'WHOAAAA! Big boy!' and we saw our proud boy beaming happily. The next few days, my boy reverted back to wearing his diaper when I asked him so I just let him decide and not push him at all. Then about 4-5 days after that, I asked him again, and he said OK. Since then, no more diapers needed!

I checked with my SIL (she has 6 kids) and she advised us to wake Ben up halfway sleeping so he could pee in his potty instead letting him sleep through the entire night and holding it in his bladder for 8-9 hours. To be honest, it was already 3 days my boy went without diapers before I told my SIL on his latest milestones and never once I woke him up to pee. I also know my 2nd BIL woke his son up every night at 3am to pee in his potty (for about 2 years they did that).

Nowadays if I sleep late or I woke up halfway or I woke up early, I will get my boy to pee in his potty. But that is if I remember he drank a lot before going to bed. Else I will let him sleep through.

As for my 16 months old girl, nothing new to report for now... So there you go, looks like we are getting almost all of the goals soon for Benjamin! Thank God for this and for my dear boy to be so good in following through his potty training!

We are all so proud of you both, Benjamin & Alyson!
