How We Wash Our Little One's Bum After They Pooped...

~ Posted on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at 8:16 AM ~

The other day, I saw a mummy asked "Want to ask if cleansing wipes is safe for newborn? Anyone use any good brand to wipe LO buttock after LO poo?" in one of the mummy groups I joined on Facebook and decided to write this post to share our methods of how and what we do when washing our little ones (aka LOs) bums after they pooped.

My immediate reply was "At home, I used warm water with facial cotton for both my kids before they turned 1 month old. After 1 mth old and before they can stand, I washed them over the sink or bend over my lap while I squat on bathroom floor. If outside, I use baby wipes, brands not particular. Most important is apply nappy cream after wash and clean to prevent rash. I apply nappy cream for first 2 months after that no more."

Now, before I elaborate further, just want to share that both my kids so far have never experienced any nappy rash and I think it is because we do the following:

1. Ensure baby diapers are regularly changed (I changed when I feel it is heavy or after they poop of course or if it is not heavy at all, I will still change every 2-3 hours)

2. Ensure baby's bum are wiped clean (whether you use baby wipes, cloth, wash etc)

3. Apply nappy cream around baby's bum area (concentrating on the area where they would be in most of contact of pee or poop). We use Bepanthen Ointment 100 gr. TubeBepanthen for both our kids.

4. Always be alert to check whether baby has pooped or not and don't let them sit (soak!) in their pooped diaper for long time.

Ok, back to our bum washing regime:

1. Newborn until 1 month old:

For both our kids, before they turned 1 month old, we use facial cotton wipes (no particular brand), soak into a small container of warm water, squeezed off the excess water and wiped their bum.

Each facial cotton wipes can only be used once, meaning, soak into warm water, squeezed off the excess water, wipe to clean, then throw (never re-dip the facial cottons into the container of warm water!). Repeat until bum is cleaned. Then apply nappy cream and put on new diaper.

2. For 1 month onwards until they can stand by themself:

After 1 month old and before they know how to stand themselves, we will carry them and wash them over the sink. And yes, that means cold water. We will use this method while they are still small and not able to wriggle around, so that'd be around 1 to 5 months old.

Once our kid got bigger and wriggle more, we have to wash them in the bathroom. By this age, their bum can withstand cold water so this is our preferred method of washing their bum after they pooped.

So far my 9 months old Alyson is being washed like the pictures shown below. Hubby will stand and carry our LOs while he washes them. I on the other hand, prefer to squat down (don't want to strain my back), put my kids over my thighs and wash them.

3. Once they can stand on their own:

This is the easiest stage! I just get my kid to stand, tell them to spread their legs wide and wash the poop (whatever left). So far, only my 3 year old Benjamin is doing this and it helps greatly now that he is potty trained mostly (I'm working on getting him diaperless for bedtime at night, other than that, he is completely potty trained already!)

4. Regime when we are out:

Of course, the above can't be practised if we are out (like in the mall) so we have to resort to using baby wipes to clean the mess.

What is your washing regime when it comes to cleaning your LO's bum after they pooped?

Prolonged No Pooping...

~ Posted on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 7:48 AM ~

The last time I wrote about my girl's prolonging case was back in mid November last year, about her 2 months prolonged jaundice ending.

And now, another prolonged case... this time, prolonged NO pooping. Yep... 2 weeks.. well, almost...

At the time I write this post (which is yesterday), she has just pooped! Finally! After almost 2 weeks without pooping! She pooped about 5 times, pebble (chewing gum ball) sized poops. The biggest one was about twice the size of my thumbs stacked together. Sorry for being too graphic here.

To be honest, throughout the almost 2 weeks of no pooping, of course I'm worried. I mean, I cannot imagine how painful it might be for her to poop when the time comes. I started praying after 1 week, telling God about our situation and that I will not mind the mess when it comes. Just let her poop with as less pain as possible.

On the other hand, I was not worried that she might be constipated as exclusively breastfed babies are not at high risks of constipation (confirmed this with our pediatrician via phone call just few hours before she finally pooped). I did checked out websites on the Internet which all confirmed that unless my child is on formula milk (risks are higher as formula milk are harder to digest and can't be fully digested) or in pain, then I should be worried.

Problem is my girl is not in pain. She's her usual chirpy self.

What I did to help move things along are:

- Pray!

- Increased breastfeeding as breastmilk is a great laxative!

- Give more water throughout the day to hydrate my girl.

- Apply more nappy cream on her anus area to lubricate it when she poops (helps avoid straining the area in case the poop is too big).

- Feed more banana (pead's advice) between feedings to help move the poop along (*Note: We didn't get to try this method since my girl pooped before we managed to buy the banana)

My girl cried for the first few seconds when the poops came out but otherwise was back to her chirpy self and once the poop is out, you can see her happy face as if nothing happened at all!

So there you go, another prolonged case which you can now tell people 'It can happen!'

I just want to tell you guys, especially breastfeeding mothers, if your child is in the same situation as mine, fully breastfed, alert and active as usual, then don't get too panicky.

Try the natural ways first before resorting to using medicine or ointment to force the poop out as it might not help your child next time! (think the dependency towards the medicine and ointment for pooping as in they might end up relying on medicine and ointment to poop next time!)

So have your child ever encountered this before? How long can they go without pooping?

* Update on 4th June 2012: I noticed that when I give my girl banana mashed, she will poop. Do take note of the article I mentioned in my comment section below about bananas (it can help in pooping but it can also cause constipation!)

Ways to Deal with a Kid Who Likes to Pick His Nose...

~ Posted on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at 7:03 AM ~

I've blogged before on why I should not force my toddler to take picture with me... This is the reason why...

And AGAIN why I never learned my lesson...because yes, we BOTH NEVER LEARNED... and CHANGED!!!

So I thought, if I can't change him, perhaps there are more subtle ways to mask this ermm... embarrassing display of 'affection' from my 3 year old toddler... I mean, he will still picks his nose no matter what... so, this is what I do... I get him to take picture with me again...

See, I told you, embarrassing habits are kinda hard to kick off... it's like:

Me: "Ben, come take picture with mummy!"

What Ben hears: *Hey Ben, come dig your nose and pose in front the camera! *

So, read on next step...

I just tell him to cover his nose and make sure nobody see him picking his nose. And wow, he immediately listens and does it! I will definitely (but slowly) get him to kick away this habit in time!

But until then, if you see my boy covering his nose, we all know what he is doing...

Wish us both luck!
