Preparing Baby Solids - Banana Puree

~ Posted on Monday, May 14, 2012 at 8:42 AM ~

One of my Facebook follower asked me to blog about how I prepare the solids for my girl when I posted pictures of my kids' meals on my Facebook page. So here it goes the tutorial for banana puree:

** Personal Note: Just choose 1 (for start) small ripe banana, peel off the skin, cut into thin slices. I normally use a small spoon to mash the banana and mix with my breastmilk which I hand expressed on the spot. You can opt to not add in the breastmilk and serve the mashed up banana as it is but I prefer to thin up the mashed banana with my breastmilk for now.

Hope the above tutorial helps! Feel free to ask questions or share your feedback/experiences!

Someone told me not to give banana to baby due to acidic. Coz maybe their tummy still fragile. If cooked is still OK.

Huh? Cooked? Remember you tell me it turned black when you steam/cook it? Hahaha... anyway, banana is good la, old folks will say don't eat banana at night cos will cause wind. I don't know leh...

I'm not sure if taking too much of banana can cause vomiting. I used to give her banana but in very small portion. When I asked my Nanny to give her in rice cereal she gave like 2 or 3 times more. She loves it. But.. That day my gal vomited 3 times. Huh.. taking too much banana can cause vomiting?

Hi Jani,
What type of banana are you giving your girl? I know there are certain types of bananas which are more suitable for infants/toddlers. Get those smaller types like the 'mai jai jiu' - sorry don't know what it's called it English or Malay Tong

mai jai jiu? Don't know what's that :p
I bought a bigger one, but not the biggest type that they usually use for pisang goreng. anyway, next time I'll buy the smaller type, they said its better for children.

Do steam the bananas first to prevent constipation, as metioned in the other comment. Our nurse taught me this. When baby is much older, then try raw bananas. Smile

Hey Jani!
I think is pisang mas. Not sure, but it is small type, like 3-4 inches long only.

Hey MieVee!
As mentioned in comments above, one of my SAHM tried steaming the bananas and they turned black! So how long should we steamed the bananas??

Also to answer your opinion on bananas causing constipation, you can read: expertscolumn.com/.../do-bananas-cause-constipation

"Do bananas cause constipation?  -Yes, when the bananas eaten are yet green and not ripened. Green unripe bananas contain high amount of starch which is harder to digest. Green bananas can help alleviate diarrhea, in this case.

Do bananas cause constipation? -No, when the bananas eaten are yellow and ripened. Yellow bananas contain fibers and potassium which both help in moving bowels.

Do bananas cause constipation? -Yes, when eaten too much in a day, even those ripened bananas. Too much fiber intake with less fluid in the body may cause the stools to build up leading to constipation.

Do bananas cause constipation? -No, when eaten 1-2 ripened bananas a day while consuming proper amounts of water."

Unless the advice is by a doctor, I don't trust completely what others said Tong The last time I hear an advice given by a nurse on breastfeeding matters, the more I don't trust them Tong
