Teaching & Learning Moment with 3D Soft Blocks

~ Posted on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at 8:00 AM ~

Over a month ago, I blogged about my lucky purchase from a Preloved group I joined on FB where I bought this 52 pieces of 3D soft blocks puzzles. Our oldest kiddo doesn't seem to be interested with it but our younger 2 girls love it. These are the latest creations by our 4 year old girl. She made a human shape and bird shape from the puzzle blocks. Awesome!

Teaching & Learning Moment - I Say It & You Draw It!

~ Posted on Monday, October 19, 2015 at 6:12 AM ~

Recently I invented a game with our eldest kiddo where I say a theme and he draws out something related to the theme! He was bugging me to tell him what to draw (he normally does this with Lego bricks but this time he wanted to draw something) so out of the blue I just say out a theme and I told him draw something related to the theme.

So I started by telling him 'OCEAN!' and he drew this. A man surfing on very high waves in the ocean with the sunny sun at the background.

Then I told him 'ISLAND!' and he drew this.

I think he got this inspiration from watching the 'Journey 2' movie with the volcano at the background.

Then I told him 'BRAZIL!' and he paused a while.

Then I mentioned 'Brazil or Rio, you know from the 'Rio' movie with the birds and all? Well, it's okay if you can't think of anything to do with Brazil' but a few seconds later, he showed me this. Awesome!

Next one, I told him 'BEACH!' and he drew this.

I asked him why are there 2 people on the beach?

He said, 'No, the left one is Wilson the ball? You know from the movie 'Cast away'? The right one is the uncle who got stranded on the island'. Whoa.... cool cool!

Still in awe with his drawings so far, I decided to make it harder.

I told him 'ANCIENT CHINA!' and he drew this.

The Great Wall of China!

Next one, I told him 'LONDON!' and he drew this.

A very obvious Big Ben, the clock tower can be seen in his drawing.

He asked me what's next, so I told him 'DESERT!' and he drew this.

The Great Pyramid with a man riding a camel and some warning road signs, telling the person not to venture further and that it is dangerous. Nice!

Running out of ideas by now, I told him 'CITY VIEW!' and he drew this.

Some skyscrapers with roads and a big moon in the sky. I love the 'CITY' signs on one of the buildings. Nice touch!

Seriously out of idea by now, so I told him this is the last one, 'WAR!' and he drew this.

Overall, I am very very impressed with his drawings. Just amazing!

How to Turn Your Smartphone into a 3D Hologram Projector

~ Posted on Sunday, October 18, 2015 at 2:30 PM ~

I saw a YouTube tutorial on how to turn your smartphone into a 3D hologram and was having a bit of a challenge thinking what I could use to substitute one of the main components required for this project.

In the YouTube tutorial, you need the following items to make this project: graph paper, plastic transparent CD case, tape or super glue, pen, scissors, smartphone, knife or glass cutter.

I skipped through most of the items required and decided to MacGyver-ised my own stuff. I totally omitted the graph paper, the CD case and the knife or glass cutter. Instead of using the CD case (which I don't have actually hence the need to turn into a McGyver), I thought of using one of the things I have in my study room. A lot of it actually. Was thinking about it in my head and decided to give it a try.

So anyway, instead of using a CD case and knife or glass cutter to cut the case, I use a laminating pouch sheet. I know I am so clever hahahahaha... I looked up a printable template for the trapezoid shape and print out a copy of it on an A4 size paper. From there I flipped open the laminating pouch sheet and trace out the trapezoid shape from the printed A4 copy earlier. I used up as much space I can have on the laminating sheet and once done, let it run through the laminator machine.

Once laminated, just use a scissor to cut out the shape and fold according to the dotted lines. To secure the trapezoid shape together, just cut a tiny bit of loytape and close up the 2 sides together.

Then go search in YouTube for holographic videos and put your DIY trapezoid shape onto your smartphone and voila.... enjoy the 3D show! When the minions popped up in the hologram projector, our 4 year old girl can't resist and want to touch the figure hahahah!

So I repeat, this is a tried and tested working success quick project that uses the following items:

  • A piece of transparent laminating pouch & laminator machine

  • A piece of A4 paper (for your trapezoid template)

  • Printable trapezoid template (go to this website for her template, I don't know what language is that but just download the PDF in the link shown)

  • Scissors and pen to trace the trapezoid shape

  • Loytape

  • Smartphone

Of course, if you don't have laminating pouch or laminator machine, another alternative you can try is those plastic toy packaging. You know these toy packages often have transparent plastic covers? Cut those up and recycle it! I don't have them hence I use laminating sheets which is pretty much as thick as those plastic covers anyway.

I am really excited and happy with our results and not to forget, my MacGyverism LOL! Here are some of the ones we got. Enjoy!!
