Educating Our Children On Body Safety & Privacy

~ Posted on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at 6:49 AM ~

One of the public figures I followed on FB posted this in late May 2015. He shared a story which was told by a fan on his page.

I commented the following on the thread:

Start educating from home. Don't leave to teachers or other people to teach your child.

As Asians, we tend to be very conservative and matters pertaining to sex, body parts and relationships tend to be very hush-hush as if it is very embarrassing and shameful to even mention it.

If you have a child, once they can start to understand your instructions, teach them the correct naming of their body part. Penis (or zakar in Malay) is a penis, don't call it with any other nicknames just because you are shy to say it. No cuckoo birds, no whatever nonsense words. Labia, vagina, breasts, all these words teach your child. Don't replace with funny weird nicknames.

Teach them to know which body parts are strictly no-no for anyone else to touch or see.

Teach them no such thing as keeping good secrets from your parents.

Talk to them often, do not brush them off when they want to tell you anything. To a child, everything is a big thing, if you brush them off or ignore them, they will not want to approach you for anything in future.

Teaching & Learning Moment - Grocery List

~ Posted on Monday, June 8, 2015 at 7:31 AM ~

Was planning to go grocery shopping and decided to turn it into a teaching and learning moment. Got our 6 years old boy a piece of paper and pen for him to write down MY grocery list hehehe...

As I said out the words, I paused and wait, making sure he knows how to spell the words and writing it correctly.

Teaching & Learning Moment

Now why this falls into the 'Teaching & Learning Moments!'?

* I get to expose and teach our kiddos to help out with some housechores.

* I get to teach our boy to practise their handwriting skills.

* Our boy gets to practise his listening skill.

* Our boy gets to practise his spelling.

* I get to instil a sense of responsibilities in our boy as I entrust the list to him to strike off the items we managed to get during our grocery shopping trip.

* I get to boost his sense of accomplishments for being mummy's little helper!

Win-win!

Let's Learn Bahasa & Cantonese - Son / Daughter

~ Posted on Friday, June 5, 2015 at 6:08 AM ~

Ever since I started kindergarten at 6 years old, I have been attending public schools (main language is Bahasa Malaysia) and during my earlier years, I mixed around with a lot of Malay friends and even spoke Bahasa with my elder brother at home (he also attends public schools), even to this day. So Bahasa Malaysia used to be my main language other than Cantonese and later on English (brushed up more when I met my hubby then boyfriend through snail mails, I had to practise and brush up my English as he doesn't speak Cantonese) Anyway, I think it is fun to be able to practise back and sharing what I know with those of you who are interested.

And so, here goes our next lesson: SON / DAUGHTER...

Let's Learn Bahasa & Cantonese

For those of you who are more often on Facebook, you can also find the tutorials on my Facebook fan page. I have created a "Let's Learn Bahasa & Cantonese!" album to store the phrases. Enjoy learning!
