iPad App Review - Luca Lashes and His First Haircut

~ Posted on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at 5:38 PM ~

When I saw the opportunity to review this app, the first thing that came to my mind was "I need this app!" In case you don't know, I have been cutting my 3 years old boy's hair ever since day 1!

I don't see him complaining and I wouldn't mind IF I have the skills to cut hair... which I don't!! I do feel embarrassed at times when people asked me who cut my boy's hair as I think it must be his uhmmm... 'unique' hairstyle that caught their attention and prompted them to ask me that! So I hope this app will help my boy in the transition towards getting his hair cut by someone else other than mummy! Anyway, my review as below...

Description from the product page:

"Is it time for your little one's first haircut? Have your children join Luca Lashes as he discovers the hair salon for the first time! This is a multilingual (English, French, Italian, Spanish, and coming soon Chinese) educational, audio app that continues the Luca Lashes series about children's "first" experiences.

This entertaining app encourages children to enjoy their first haircut along with Luca Lashes, the Brown-Eyed Boy with the Magic Eyelashes. Children can discover the sights and sounds of a hair salon through interactivity (touch, sight, and sound), and the story includes a list of parent suggestions to help with the inevitable nervous reaction most children go through at their first haircut. The Luca Lashes series is intended for children in the 0-4 year range."

What's good?

* It is engaging and interactive and I love that we can also touch the page on the screen and the page sways according to your direction you sways it!

* I like the storyline where it tells how Luca experienced his first haircut and discover what was it like to cut his hair in a new place.

* The illustration is beautiful and can't help but envy how nice it is to be having a hair cut sitting in cool cars and horses as the chair! I can see my boy nodding his head agreeing how cute and cool it is to see Luca sitting in a car having his hair cut.

Other Things to Note

I understand it is the character's 'power' to gain confidence and be brave by blinking his eyelashes twice but for me, I decided not to stress on this to my boy (compared to other pages, I will normally repeat and explain again to my boy) as I don't want him to be blinking at things. Maybe it's just my weird preferance but other than this, I think this book is a great start if you want to introduce the idea of having their hair cut in a salon to your little ones.

Food Review & Giveaway - Tepung Magik

~ Posted on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at 12:00 PM ~

Ok, I was going back to and fro whether I should put this post under product review or food review, and ended up with the later one as it was used in food preparation, so yeah, here is my review of the:

TEPUNG MAGIK!

In direct translation from Malay language to English, it means magic flour.

What's so magical about it? Read on my review below will ya?

This flour is actually fried mushroom powder but it is also a multipurpose flour as it can be used for other types of foods as well. I'm translating the info below from the product page.

"Fried mushroom powder is the title of the magic powder because the crispness remains for hours. Unlike ordinary flour in the market, it will go stale quickly after frying. The advantages of this flour are:
* Quick & easy to prepare
* Not Oily
* No need to use eggs
* Do not need to use too much flour
* Do not need to use too much oil
* Fried foods does not go soggy fast"

The moment I received the flour, I quickly got to thinking what can I used it with. Now, I am not a cook, the only time I cook is for my kids, the rest are mainly handled by my MIL and my hubby occassionally. So, I tried the flour with 2 very adhoc recipes of mine:

#1 : POPCORN CHICKEN

I got the idea of making this while I was testing another product I got for my review (the Scotch™ Premium Kitchen Scissors) As I cut and cut the chicken meat smaller and smaller, I thought, "Hey! This looks so cute and small, kinda like the KFC popcorn chicken! Hmmmm... "

Picture below showing the preparation, how I marinate the chicken meat with the Tepung Magik and then frying the chicken bits.

And this is the result of the chicken bits fried - yumyumyumsssss! I did not prepared a lot as it was my first attempt and I thought I should minimise any kitchen disasters for my 1st attempt, so I only made a small bowl of chicken popovers, total about 20 small bits of chicken I can say...

FYI, my MIL had 1 piece, I had 2 pieces, my hubby whom I thought had 1 piece (I gave him 1 to try) and then he sneaked behind me and took 3-4 pieces more (I let it cool down in kitchen as my 3 year old boy was having his nap).

And ladies and gentlemen, the rest of the chicken popovers went to this handsome cheeky man below... yup, ALL of the chicken bits that I prepared and fried with patience and love... And if my boy can sit still and whack all the food, it really means it is good stuff!

#2 : FRIED DORY FISH NUGGETS

Hey, since I'm on the roll, the next day I decided to make fried dory fish nuggets. Told my MIL that I planned to cook for dinner that night and defrost a slice of dory fish from the freezer hours earlier. Again, I cut the dory fish into small bite sizes and marinated them in the Tepung Magik.

This is the result of the fried dory fish - again yumyumyumsssss! I felt like Gordon Ramsey, whipping up yummylicious foods for everyone hahahaha!

In summary, this is a very promising product which I would not mind using again. It has a herb type of smell and for Malay readers of my blog, do note that this flour is labelled 'Halal' so, no worries ya! Again, there are many other foods you can try on, not just chicken and fish, you can fry mushroom, potatoes, long beans, tofu, much much more! I'm happy to be given the opportunity to try this out!
