I have been sharing some of my favorite angpow pieces on an angpow collectors group in Facebook and some members have been telling me to continue sharing my memorable stories and so I thought, why not write it down, that way, our kiddos can read about it when they grow up next time, eh?
For those of you who are not familiar or never heard of the words 'Angpow' (also known as 'ang pau', 'ang pao', 'angpau'), here is a quick definition:
Angpow = Red Packet (filled with cash inside) given during festivals
So for today's angpow story, it comes from this piece of lovely angpow:
Those who have read my previous story about the Metrojaya butterfly angpow might remember that I started working part-time at 16 years old during school holidays, 10am to 10pm every day for about 1 month plus. During form 5 time, it was quite an 'in' thing for brands like Levi's, Converse, and etc and for high-schoolers like us then, owning any items from any one of these brands instantly put you in the 'in' club.
I remember tagging along with my schoolfriends during weekends (not working part-time then as I took a break to concentrate on the upcoming SPM exam) and as they were browsing and trying on the Levi's jeans, I felt so envious as they can easily afford to get one.
Of course, at that time I have some savings made from my part-time jobs and I can afford to get one too but it doesn't cross my mind to use the savings to buy a jeans. After all, a pair of Levi's jeans is almost equivalent to my 1 month pay from the part-time promoter job.
I thought of all the hard work, sweat and blood I poured into the part-time job and saving the money so that I don't have to burden my parents. I thought of what's the point of getting branded stuff just to show off to people.
In the end, I bought a pair of jeans from another brand called Voir, for a fraction of the price of a Levi's. I wore that jeans for years, in fact, only gave it away last year when I did spring cleaning as I can't fit into the jeans anymore.
I'm keeping this angpow to remind myself that even though I was stingy back at 17 years old, I know I made the right choice then. Btw, I only owned my 1st pair of Levi's at 35 years old... THIS YEAR. I bought a pair of preloved Levi's jeans from the Preloved group for RM30.
