Our Take on MMR...

~ Posted on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at 9:23 AM ~

Alright, I hope it's not too late to be posting this as I've just got an email from a bloggy friend (that's you Claire!) inquiring about MMR jab for her child (about to turn or already 12 months old now).

(*Image taken from Google search)

Just for your info, Ben got his MMR jab when he was 18 months old. Yup... we delayed half a year from letting him take his MMR jab, and then we came across an article and we rushed as soon as we could have the time available to get the jab for Ben. Before I write on, please take some time to read the article, the very same one I read (and posted in my FB page) which made us changed our decisions and got the jab for Ben. (*updates: I can't seem to be able to load the article website anymore... hence am not able to show the link in this post anymore)

So, back to this topic... after reading this article and discussing with hubby on whether we should go for the MMR jab now, we also took into considerations on the fact that I'm still breastfeeding Ben, so, I would want him to be protected (BM helps with immune system you see) by my BM while I'm still able to breastfeed him.

I know for a fact that whenever Ben has stomach flu, teething or any illness (which I can count with 1 hand throughout his now 20 months of being on this planet) he recovers really fast and sometimes we didn't even realised there's anything wrong with Ben cos' he's just alert and active all the time!

So, my personal thoughts on this is, if we delay the MMR jab longer and I'm not able to breastfeed Ben anymore (touch wood), how is he going to cope and recovers fast from any side effects (just in case)?

So after discussing with hubby, we decided to go ahead and make an appointment to see Ben's paedictrician. Because we delayed Ben's MMR jab (supposed to take at 12 months), his 2nd booster (DPT, Hib and IPV) jab which was supposed to be taken at 18 months was also delayed. In the doctor's office, we were scolded because of our actions in delaying the MMR jab and putting unnecessary risks to Ben (imagine if he contracted measles or anything throughout the 6 months we delayed the jab!)

So anyway, to cut the story short, Ben finally got his MMR jab. Side effects noted:

* 1 week after the jab, slight fever at 37.5℃ which we cool down his body temperature by giving him sponge bath and throughout the duration, Ben is still active as ever. No other medication given at all.
* 3 weeks after the jab, Ben had a mild rash on both his legs between his knees to his upper thighs and part of his elbows and arms area. No itch whatsoever, just red rash that disappears in one hour time (exactly one hour). And Ben's still alert, active and jumping around like normal. No other medication given at all.

Pictures below taken when Ben got the rash.

Of course, I am in no position to influence your decisions on the MMR jab. I'm just sharing our thoughts and take on this. We too delayed it for 6 months and then finally decided to get it. And you know, after we got Ben the jab, we actually realised how silly it is for us to delay the jab... it took us 6 months to  get over the unnecessary worries and putting the unnecessary risks on Ben (Thank God he's healthy and did not contract any measles!)

I have friends who are still delaying it, I have friends who only got the MMR jabs for their children when they turn 4 years old (that was because MMR back then was a new thing), I have friends who wanted their child to get the jab but had to delay it because of the egg white allergy.

Internet is a wonderful thing, but as you searched on this topic, you get lots of different point of views. MMR causes autism, MMR causes deafness, death, no links between MMR and autism, etc etc...

So please, discuss through with your spouse and check through with your child's paed. Ask around your friends and relatives whether their child have taken the jab and any side effects noted.

Here's some other links I found on the Internet:

I hope that this post is able to help you, Claire!

Anyone else had any thoughts and experience to share?

Dear Jenny,

Tricia goes to the government clinic to get her vaccinations. However, our lists of japs is much lesser than those who goes to the private doctor. I got worried and went to see Tricia's pead (we see him every 2-3 months once). He told me that breastfed babies need not need any extra japs that the government recommends except for this MMR. So, we'll give her this jap when she's about 12 months.

Hi Carmen!

Oh wow! We try not to give those new vaccines or x amount in 1 type of jabs. Although it saves the time and pain (all shots into 1 jab), we prefer the conventional jabs. Our paed is also from the old school of thoughts (he's in his 70s now) who believes we only get the jabs that are necessary for our child. And I think paed nowadays, if you do not ask further they will just give the jab, after all, it's business to them what.. so do more research before getting the jab. If not necessary, no need to get. So glad your boy is OK now!

Hi Tracy!

The first time, we tried going to a gov clinic but too long queue and it's combined with adults and other clinical patients, so we no longer attempt any gov clinics for Ben's jab. Even though pay more, at least with private paed we feel more at ease (less patients, less unnecessary exposure to infection risks). Ben's jabs schedule is following the gov jab booklet. Only those necessary will be taken, those new fancy smancy jabs are no-no for us.

Btw, congrats on your new domain! Smile

ya, Jboy also went to the governement clinics for jap. so we just took the necessary jap until 12mth old. Now i'm wondering should i go for the pneumococal because it had been a lot of "talking" about it recently.

Jenny @ I'm a full-time mummy

Hi Miki!

A lot of 'talking' means what? Good or bad talking? From who? Got any side effects and what's the age at risks of getting this? I remember our paed told us some jabs are not required and those who contract the disease are more to adults or due to eating habits, like the Hepatitis jab (dunno B or C) which is due to unhygienic seafood dishes which for children are not required la... like my paed said, will you give your child eat seafood before he turns 1 year old?!

Go research and find out more first. Don't get unnecessary jabs la..

Hi Samantha!

Thanks for the follow! I've returned the favor. Hope to see you back in my blog sometime! Smile

Karli

Oh wow...hmmm, now I'm wondering the right thing to do...  It's such a hard decision.  We delayed Livia's MMR; in fact, I don't even think we planned to do it at her 2 year appt. (in March).  Maybe I'll have to reconsider.  Thank you for the information.  I can't wait until all these jabs are over!

aurie

hi - quick comment from the states Smile  we aren't required to have the mmr until school age, so since my girls aren't school age, aren't in preschool or day care, and we haven't traveled much we have held off on getting the shot.  I was nervous about the shot, so we had a conversation with the doctor and he was okay with waiting, so we have.

Hello Karli!
Thanks for dropping by! I'm glad Ben's jabs are over for now... his next jab will only be when he's 6 years old! Phewwww...

Hi Aurie!
In Malaysia, MMR is targeted for 12 months old child (though it's not compulsory or enforced, it is however listed in one of the must take jabs in the child's immunization card) Thanks for sharing your feedback! Have a nice day!

Hi Jenni!
Thanks for the award! Have a nice day!

Pauline

Hi Jenny,

Iggy takes all his jabs at government clinic, following the schedule provided.  He still got his 18 months jab next month before the long break.  He also took MMR as scheduled, at 12 months. So far Iggy takes all his jabs well, at most, slight fever for less than half day and no medication taken.

Aries

I am glad my kids are in their teens now and less worry of all these jabs etc, but I have other things to worry about now. Teenagers are the most difficult to handle - still learning how to handle with care. Hahahah, I don't think I should frighten you like this, my apology.

Jenny @ I'm a full-time mummy

Hi Pauline!

Glad to hear Iggy has no side effects other than the mild fever. And yes, after the booster jab at 18 months, it will be a long break before he takes his next one again! Smile Thanks for sharing your feedback!

Hey Aries!
Oh yeah.. teenage years... no need to worry, you didn't frighten me hahaa

Tracy

Hi Jenny,

Thanks! I learnt a lot from you too. the government clinic that I went to has a separate section for mothers-to-be & infants. They are quite nice too.

Miki,
I have 3 friends asking me to go for the Roctarvirus & Pheumococoal jabs. One of them even compared my jab list with hers (of course she has more becos she went to a private paed). When I brought Tricia to our private paed just to make sure she's totally fine, I asked him about it. He said...babies who are exclusively breastfed do not need these jabs. He only recommended the MMR. The jabs are not cheap thou!

Jenny @ I'm a full-time mummy

Hi Tracy,

The gov clinic we went to the 1st time also have a separate section for mums and infants but the waiting area are all connected - so, to us, no way. Plus we went in at 2pm only to be told to come in the next day before 8am and queue for our numbers (which we were told will be around 2pm) so, forget it lah... we go to private paed instead.

Our paed only told us to get the necessary jabs, no need those fancy smancy types. Rotavirus affects the stomach and intestines area right? I guess BM would have helped in the immunity towards this as one time, our whole family (except hubby) had stomach flu, one by one down vomitted, had diarrhea and then fever, but the one with the less impact is Ben... He just vomitted once and that's all. I guess it's because of my BM la Smile

Claire

Hi Jenny,

Thanks for this post...

I was so scared about the MMR jab since i read about it on the internet!
So far Belle doesn't have any allergies and every after an injection she handle it well.. I'm hoping she going fine with this MMR jab..

So my worry is... Do they perform the MMR jab and the JE together since they fall on the same month?

Jenny @ I'm a full-time mummy

Hi Claire!

Hope this post helps! I'm sorry I can't answer on the JE jab as it wasn't required for peninsular M'sia side. You'll have to check with your paed. For me, I think it'll be safer and better to separate the jabs.

Hi, I clicked on the article link but it didn't lead me to anything related. Has it expired? Could you share what the article was about?

Jenny @ I'm a full-time mummy

Hi May!
Thanks for highlighting. Apparently the domain of the link is expired hence no way to see the article already Frown
