iPad App Review - Little Critter: Just One More Pet!

~ Posted on Friday, September 25, 2015 at 7:09 AM ~

We are a big fan of Little Critter's apps and I think it is great to be able to review this app as our kiddos are growing up and have been nagging us to get them dog as their pet. We're still waiting for our kiddos to be older a wee bit before we even consider dogs as pets. For now, our kiddos have a few tortoises which were a gift from their aunt recently.

* This app is engaging and interactive and I love that we can also touch the objects in each page on the screen and the words pop out to tell you what it is!

* There are options to go to other numbers instead of going through one by one.

* I like that there is an option to use new narrator's voice (aka me!)

* I like the storyline where it teaches us how to care for animals and pets, to be kind and caring if you find any lost pets.

Little Critter: Just One More Pet

* I also used the opportunity to educate our kiddos on the big responsibilities and commitment required to own a pet.

* Overall a nice story for the family!

Sharing - Teens Are Using Fake Calculator Apps To Hide Photos From Their Parents

~ Posted on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at 12:05 AM ~

I came across this article which I must definitely share with you guys as I'm very interested to know your thoughts on this. For your convenience, I have copied the excerpts from the article here:

"At first glance, the icon looks like a run-of-the-mill calculator, but when you open it and type in the correct passcode, it will open a treasure trove of hidden pictures and files that don’t appear anywhere else on your device.

It’s a good idea to check iTunes and/or Google Play for these apps, typically billed as “photo vaults,” to see what other shady apps may be hiding under your nose."

I did a little bit of investigating and checking out on the AppStore and found these few. You might be able to search more by checking the related apps. But nevertheless, it is quite worrying to see such apps being made available.

Fake Calculator Apps

As a parent to 3 kiddos with age range of 2 to 6.5 years old, I've still got years ahead for me to worry about them being able to install apps and/or owning their own smartphones/tablets and so on. I do hope we will be able to forge a relationship where our kiddos are able to come to us for anything, and not hiding any secrets from us. With that, whatever apps or temptations will not succeed to sway them away or make them resort to such apps to hide things from anyone.

But I guess for my stand and to put myself in this situation, I will definitely be monitoring what our children have on their smartphones when they do own one and only with our permission will they be able to purchase or install any apps. Or perhaps, another way is to let them use one of our old smartphones when necessary, that way, our permissions/passwords is required before they can install anything. But that's just my personal opinions.

How about you? What do you think?

Sharing - Meningitis B Vaccine for Babies

~ Posted on Monday, June 22, 2015 at 11:33 PM ~

I came across this article which I must definitely share with you guys as I'm very interested to know your thoughts on this.

For your convenience, I have copied the excerpts from the article here:

Meningitis B

"The meningitis B vaccine will be introduced to the routine childhood vaccination programme in Scotland from 1 September, it has been announced.

Scotland is now one of the few nations in the world to offer the vaccination to all infants. The vaccination will be given in three doses at two months, four months and a year. Babies aged two months when the vaccine is introduced will be eligible.

Meningitis B is a bacterial infection that particularly affects children under the age of one. It commonly affects children under five years of age, and is also common among teenagers aged 15 to 19.

Symptoms include a high fever with cold hands and feet, confusion, vomiting and headaches.

Most children will make a full recovery with early diagnosis and antibiotic treatment, although it is fatal in one in 10 cases. About one in four of those who survive is left with long-term problems such as amputation, deafness, epilepsy and learning difficulties."

Here's another article on Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib):

"Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) is a bacterium that can cause a number of serious illnesses, especially in young children.

Meningitis B

Of the small number of cases that do occur nowadays, most affect adults with long-term (chronic) underlying medical conditions, rather than young children.

Meningitis is the most severe illness caused by Hib and, even with treatment, one in every 20 children with Hib meningitis will die. Of those who do survive, many will have long-term problems such as hearing loss, seizures and learning disabilities."

In Malaysia, we have this jab under our vaccination schedule (under Hib dos 1, 2 and 3 respectively at month 2, month 3 and month 5). For those of you who are curious on other countries' immunization schedule, I actually did a compilation on Comparison of Immunization Schedules of other countries (just for knowledge purposes).
