Opportunities to Learn is Everywhere...

~ Posted on Friday, July 13, 2012 at 8:18 AM ~

SInce middle of April this year, I have started doing daily activities like crafts, coloring, cutting, drawing etc on top of my teaching my 3 years old boy.

IMHO, you don't need to follow a lesson plan just so you can teach your child. Of course having activities books like crafts, coloring, cutting, drawing are awesome, but my point is other than following what is in these books, we can also apply and show examples from our surroundings and environment.

As a SAHM, I try to teach and explain whatever I can to my kids. OK, at the moment, although both my kids listen to me, only my 3 years old boy understand what I say to him and maybe I think ocassionally, my 10 months old girl might kinda understand what I'm saying hahaha...

Anyway, like I mentioned earlier, I teach and explain whenever the opportunities arises.

It could be just the 3 of us (hubby at work) hanging out at our balcony and I will go telling my boy the vehicles that passes by in front of our house (we live in front of a highway though it was barricaded with a sound-proof wall, we still can see the top of most vehicles passing through).

I started doing that since Benjamin could stand by himself and today, he will just tell me 'Look mummy! That's a bus' or he will go 'Lorry', 'Long green lorry', 'Siren sound from the ambulance', '2 busses' so on and so forth.

Or we could be playing in the water pool at our balcony and I will go teaching him about shapes and colors of his toys, to share his toys with his baby sister, to clean up the toys and help me wash up the balcony after playing, etc etc.

Ben learning even while bathing!

The learning just never stops.

For me, as long as you are creative,

EVERYTHING and ANYTHING can be a learning tool.

A conversation piece. Something to teach your child. An opportunity to bond and share and see the knowledge being absorbed by a young child's mind. You can teach them about:

* Types of vehicles,

*  Buildings, ("That is a school")

* Shapes, ("Look at that building, it looks like a circle shape right?")

* Sizes and comparison (short, shorter, shortest), ("That building is taller than this building")

* Colors,

* Sounds,

* Locations ("See the bird is ON the tree" or "The cat is under the tree")

* Counting ("How many lorries can you see?")

Ben counting!

* Parts ("Check out that tree in front of us! Look at the color of the flowers, the branch, the bark..."),

* Occupation ("Look Ben! That is a postman, just like Postman Pat, he delivers letters and packages to us!"),

* Usage, ("Do you know why trees and plants have roots? Unlike us, we have legs to stand and move around, but trees and plants do not have legs, so they depend on their roots to stand firm and not tumble down easily...")

* Cause and effect ("Why is there siren sound coming from the fire engine? It's because the firemen are rushing to a place to help put out the fire, so do not play with fire", etc etc)

and many, many, many, MANY MORE!!!

 Other highly interactive and creative games and activities include:
* Learn and explore as you play with animated balloons by recording your funny helium balloon voice, matching balloons with their human pairs and more!
* Bring stories from your child’s fantasy world to life by creating characters, recording dialogues, enacting scenes and creating a full-fledged play at the “Balloon Theatre”.
* Send customized and hand-written postcards to your friends and family.
* Let your little one’s imagination flow into outer space by getting them to join the stars and create imaginary constellations.
* Engage your kids with some foot tapping music as they shake a leg at the “big balloon dance”.
* Listen to what each character in the story has to say to you by nudging them to talk."

What's good?

* This app is engaging and interactive, there are surprises everywhere in the book as you move along the pages!

* The illustration is so cute and beautiful! I love the details as well!

* It is kinda cool to have Jamie Lee Curtis narrating the story!

* I love the idea of writing our own postcard, from choosing the postcard template to writing and sending it off!

* I also enjoy the the dot to dot plane game as I'm trying to introduce this activity to my 3 years old boy in our learning lessons.

Room for Improvement?

* Jamie Lee Curtis’s voice is a bit boring at some pages. In the beginning, she sounds awesome but as we go through the pages, her voice gets into the same flat tone – you know children loves it when we talked in different pitches and tones? Similar to apps, I think having children narrating the app is a better option!

* There is a game where you need to touch all the balloons, I find that although it is fun, to be finding all the 200 balloons is a bit tiring even for me. I did managed to get down to 2 balloons left, but I do hope that the developer can reduce the number of balloons required and maybe change the balloons colors once we tap it? (Can consider putting all balloons in faded grey color, once we tap it, count reduced and balloon has colors on it?)

* There is a particular page shown below which I do not like (this is just my own opinion): I find it scary to see a boy inserting something into his ears and found myself immediately flipping over to the next page so that my boy does not learn to do that!

Paranoid of Going Out...

~ Posted on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at 7:57 AM ~

It has been a while since I last drove my car (hubby's 11 year old second hand car actually, passed down to me when he bought a second hand car for his business use) and I was just starting back to gather enough courage to drive the car myself, brought Ben along a couple of times with him sitting behind like a good boy, just about 5 minutes away to buy some buns and takeaway food.

And then the news about all the crimes started coming in...

** Image credit: Google search

First it was posted by a lady on Facebook about the failed attempt to kidnap her in a shopping mall (about 20 minutes away from our house). At first I thought, OK, I won't go to shopping malls by myself or with my kids, unless my hubby is going out as well.

And then numerous cases of people being hit and attacked randomly at parking lots and got their belongings stolen while they were in the car park area.

OK, fine, I really need to step up and beefed up on observing all around while at the car park. Make sure not to draw attention to myself, don't bring big handbags or anything, put all belongings into a small pouch or best to put inside pockets of my pants. Do everything fast, don't delay or be a slowpoke and walk slowly and all. Into car, drive, out, get stuff, back into car, those kind of moves I thought...

Next a recent case of a lady and her friend being attacked in an open-air car park in broad daylight. BROAD DAYLIGHT. OPEN-AIR car park! She managed to escape after being noticed by 2 passers by because she kept on pressing her car horn with her hand and legs, all the time while being attacked.

And just yesterday I saw a post shared on a friend's Facebook wall about the latest tactic used by robbers to rob you. They lay down spikes on the road and waited for your car to drive by and when you stop to check your burst tires, they run out and rob you!

Oh gosh... what is wrong with our country?

At this rate, I might end up being at home 24/7/365 (which I already am most of the time unless we have a family outing)

What are your tips to protect yourself when you are out and about?
