Toilet Paper Roll Minions from Despicable Me

~ Posted on Monday, July 22, 2013 at 8:12 AM ~

With the recent craze of people queueing up at 12 midnight waiting at McDonald's outlets to get hold of the latest Despicable Me Minion toys from the Happy Meal set, I definitely couldn't be bothered to join in the minion craze. But my 2 kiddos love em' so what has a mum gotta do? Talked about the things I had to do for my children!

I actually ended up making these minions from toilet paper rolls. Tried googling loads of sites for template that I can just download and print out but nope.. no such luck... so I hand draw them myself. To be honest, I have phobia of drawing things as I'm not good in drawing but because I love my kiddos and mummy promised to give them minion toys... sigh...

What you need:

  • 2 piece of A4 colored paper (yellow and blue)

  • Empty toilet paper rolls (I used 3 rolls)

  • Scissors

  • Double-sided tape

  • A black marker pen

What to do:

  1. Cut the yellow colored A4 paper according to the length of a toilet paper roll (enough to cover the entire roll)

  2. Put double sided tape across each corners of the yellow paper cut-out.

  3. Tape the yellow paper cut-out to cover the toilet paper roll.

  4. Cut the blue colored A4 paper about 1/3 of the height of a toilet paper roll to make the overalls jeans for the minion.

  5. Repeat step 2 for the blue colored paper and tape it around the toilet paper roll from the base.

  6. Use your creative hand drawing skills and start drawing the minion face and everything else using the black colored marker pen (I printed a sample of the actual minions faces so I can refer to them when I draw mine)

  7. Repeat the above steps for the next minion(s).

The expressions on my kiddos face... priceless... and worth embarrassing my hand drawing skills...

The end results in close-up shot!

I hope you enjoy reading my tutorial and do give it a try! :)

More Than Meets The Eye...

Earlier last week, I asked our 4 years old boy to make a Lego car for me and when he showed me a plain simple rectangle looking box which he said is a Lego car, I thought in my heart 'Bah... so simple!' and then I jokingly asked him how to drive the car then?

He said need to take out the car roof.

And so he demonstrated to me by slowly lifting up the roof part and revealed what's inside his Lego car...

A car seat with steering and dashboard INSIDE!

Oh my awesometastic boy!!! I am just gobsmacked at this display of brilliance!!

There is more than meets the eye for this little child of mine!

Thank you God for blessing us with this child!

Lessons From a 4 Years Old Boy and His Lego...

~ Posted on Friday, June 21, 2013 at 9:23 AM ~

I'm writing this post to share with you a valuable lesson I learned few days back from my 4 years old boy and his Lego...

The initial shocked + speechless + gobsmacked moment when I discovered him dismantling EVERYTHING in his Lego fire station set which his daddy took a couple of hours to set up for him before his 4th birthday 3.5 months ago.

** Picture above taken 2 days after Benjamin's 4th birthday right after he woke up and saw the fire station Lego set that daddy spent hours the night before setting it up for his birthday surprise!

Why my reactions such way? My boy is a perfectionist and will throw tantrums the moment even the slightest Lego bricks are misplaced or put in wrong directions. He remembers EVERYTHING clearly and the Lego set has been on his play table since then with him playing with it almost on daily basis, on top of him using the free Lego bricks for his own creations and such.

When my hubby came into our room, I told him what happened, to brace himself for what's to come and wished him all the best should our boy decides to have his Lego fire station set in the same settings again.

Hubby in return asked me whether Benjamin dismantled everything by himself. I said 'Yes, he said there's a fire in his fire station and hence he took out EVERYTHING'.

Hubby said 'That's a good sign. It meant he is finally confident enough to let go of the Lego set and ready for new creations!'

Oh wow! After a couple of seconds and thinking, I realised hubby is right.

My boy is ready for bigger things now!

The fact that our 4 years old boy is willing to destroy his precious fire station set and not even throwing any fit at all... just amazing... and to think the countless threats I used to give hubby to super glue his fire station set because I couldn't stand the tantrums thrown by our boy whenever any of the Lego bricks in the fire station set dropped out or misaligned themselves and to see this happening in total peace and serenity and calmness displayed by our boy... again, simply amazing!

** Picture above taken few months back showing Benjamin focused on making his Lego creations...

Thank you for teaching mummy this important lesson, to let go and embrace new challenges!
