Angpow Story - Geometric & Organic Arts

~ Posted on Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at 5:26 AM ~

I have been sharing some of my favorite angpow pieces on an angpow collectors group in Facebook and some members have been telling me to continue sharing my memorable stories and so I thought, why not write it down, that way, our kiddos can read about it when they grow up next time, eh?

For those of you who are not familiar or never heard of the words 'Angpow' (also known as 'ang pau', 'ang pao', 'angpau'), here is a quick definition:

Angpow = Red Packet (filled with cash inside) given during festivals

So for today's angpow story, it comes from this piece of lovely angpow:

Angpow Story

Today's storytime revolves around this set of angpows given to me by an awesome collector friend. Now what does this set of angpows reminded me of? Somwhere in between of waiting for Form 1 to start, my late dad gave me this catalogue of tiles design.

It's like a 6 inch by 12 inches booklet of pages and pages of pictures filled with tons of tiles designs. I remembered being so in awe looking at those designs.

I stayed in a government flat and the only floor tiles we have was those half by half inch very simple looking beige colored tiles in the toilet floor and those 6 by 6 inches white tiles around the toilet wall. Other than that, cement floor and wall all around our flat at that age.

So, that explained my amazement and excitement of owning that catalogue. It's like a mini dream getaway where my house one day will have all these awesome tiles LOL

Anyway, I kept that catalogue like a precious but when I started form 1 and we have Arts subject, I started using the catalogue to help out with my art work. When teacher taught us about geometric and organic forms of art, I turned to my catalogue. For our homework, we have to cut out any patterns with geometric and organic designs from newspaper, magazines, brochures etc, anywhere you can find, we have to cut it out and paste it onto the art paper to submit the homework.

I remembered getting an A+ for my homework. I felt so so so happy with that and I remembered my Arts teacher's remarks that my homework is good as I was able to find unique materials from others.

I also turned to the catalogue for other occasions such as DIY greeting cards and also other Arts subject homework. By the time I finished high school, the catalogue is almost gone. All cut up with holes everywhere. It has served me really really well.

I wonder whether I can get any more catalogues like that now? Hmm.....

Product Review - Corelle Rosabelle Dinnerware

~ Posted on Friday, August 14, 2015 at 6:18 AM ~

I have been cutting down on doing product reviews since 2014 and only accepted those that I feel will definitely fit into our family dynamics (especially books on parenting or homeschooling stuff, family products, something along those genre)

Few months ago, I received an offer to review Corelle’s latest dinnerware line. Wow, I would be crazy to turn down this opportunity for my whole family to try out new products right? Anyway, let's continue with my review below...

Those of you who followed my blog will know that I've only started buckling up and cooking for the family since this beginning of 2014 (prior to that, my mum-in law cooked for us mostly) and I do feel that the look and feel of the dinnerware plays an important part in building up the excitement of the dishes I whipped up every weekdays LOL.

I received 5 pieces of Corelle Rosabelle dinnerware and 1 Corningware casserole for my review. The moment I received the items, I was already plotting and planning for opportunities on how I should use these dinnerware.

Corelle Rosabelle Dinnerware

FYI, Corelle dinnerware is made out of Vitrelle®, a unique three-layered laminated glass for superior strength and durability. The Vitrelle® makes its dinnerware resistant to breakage and chipping. I took a while admiring the beautiful designs, love love love the pastel colors of the flowers. I also tried to scratch and chip off the designs to no avail LOL.

Corelle Rosabelle Dinnerware

One thing that impressed me the most is how light and thin the dinnerware are. Everytime I hold one of the dinnerware, I have to remind myself not to get too excited as it is just so so so light! It also stacks up easily and takes up lesser space compared to my other dinnerware.

I love it so much! I looked forward to using them during mealtimes!

Btw, Corelle dinnerware is also oven and microwave safe, I've tested this out haha..

Now back to how I used these dinnerware...

I used them for my famous ayam masak merah dish.

Corelle Rosabelle Dinnerware

I used them for my stir-fry chicken in ginger and scallions, Sweet & sour pork, curry chicken,

Corelle Rosabelle Dinnerware

Spinach in anchovy soup...

Corelle Rosabelle Dinnerware

Stir-fry sweet potato leaves with Japanese tofu and fishballs...

And...

Yes, even durians. I don't know how, I can't explain it, that piece of durian just looks so gorgeous on the plate!

Corelle Rosabelle Dinnerware

Apparently the Corningware cookware can be used straight from the freezer, to the stovetop or oven, and onto the dining table for fuss-free yet stylish serving, I have yet to try this out due to being tied up these recent 2 months with GST, year end closing and auditing queries for hubby's company. Possibly will do so one of this days with my other famous dish, braised pork.

Corelle Rosabelle Dinnerware

Overall feedback, I'm very happy we get to review these products!

Definitely will be using them again and again and again!

Angpow Story - Sungei Wang

~ Posted on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at 5:17 AM ~

I have been sharing some of my favorite angpow pieces on an angpow collectors group in Facebook and some members have been telling me to continue sharing my memorable stories and so I thought, why not write it down, that way, our kiddos can read about it when they grow up next time, eh?

So for today's angpow story, it comes from this piece of lovely angpow:

Angpow Story

Today's  storytime revolves around this angpow from Sungei Wang. Those who have read my previous storytime about the Metrojaya butterfly angpow might remember that I started working part-time at 16 years old during school holidays, 10am to 10pm every day for 1 month plus.

Throughout my working time then, I get half an hour break twice daily and most of the time, I will go to the 4th floor of Sungei Wang, where the food court is to have my lunch and dinner. It was famous for its numerous economical and budget food for working folks around there.

I remembered the rows and rows of long connected tables and chairs, people sitting and joining other people's table, all in a hurry to eat and rush back to work. Our small little luxury then was the many TVs all around the food court areas showing Stephew Chow's (one of the famous Hong Kong actor) movies. You can practically see which are the popular hot spots around the food court, as lots of people will be sitting near the TV areas hahahah...

I went back to work part-time in Metrojaya again while waiting for my SPM results and of course, Sungei Wang remains my favorite eating and break time spot for me.

The last I went there was years ago, things have changed so much there, more foreigners working there, lots of new shops, things are just not the same as how I remembered it decades ago.

Sungei Wang holds a very dear place in my heart thanks to my early working experience there.
