Helper

I'm sharing this experience after reading an article on how 1 word can make kids more helpful.

Early this year when we were renovating our house roof, there was a stretch of about 3-4 days where I would bring our 3 kiddos to hang out at my sister in law's house during the daytime. We will go home when hubby finishes his work and fetches all of us home. One time, my SIL was cooking lunch and I was carrying our few months old Carolyn (who is really fussy and cries the moment I put her on a bed so I ended up carrying her most of the times) and I nudged our then not yet 5 years old boy to help out his eldest aunt. I told him to ask big aunty whether she needed any help.

To be honest, I can see her really busy doing everything alone and she hesitated when our boy asked her whether she needed any help. Then, she immediately passed some plates to him to put on the dining table, followed by cutleries and cups and etc. We were a bit worried as he carried those fragile plates from the kitchen to the dining area but he did it. With each tasks completed, she praised him for being such a good helper.

I was so happy to see him getting more excited and proud to be able to help out. Since that day, we uses the statement 'You're such as good helper!' It works, everytime and I'm glad this is working.

Crossed Fingers

Lately, our 6.5 months old Carolyn has been doing this very cute hand gestures with her fingers. Something I've never noticed our other 2 kiddos did before.

She crosses her fingers! Very very cute and sometimes, it is hard to pry off her fingers and no sooner than you managed to uncross them, she goes and crosses her fingers again! Cute!!!

And because I love to google about stuff, I actually searched for the meaning of crossed fingers just to satisfy my curiosity and in case our ever curious 5 years old boy decided to ask his mummy one day why his baby sister likes to cross her fingers hahahah...

According to Wikipedia, "To cross one's fingers was a hand gesture commonly used to implore God for protection, as well as to wish for good luck." Cool!

Learning From Car Dashboard

~ Posted on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 7:38 AM ~

I'm all for teaching our kiddos whenever the opportunities arises. One day as we are getting ready to leave the house, our 5 years old boy asked me what are those letters and pictures in front my steering means. I checked my watch and since we have a bit more time before we have to send him to his preK, I started explaining what is the area called.

Dashboard. It allows us to see how fast/slow mummy is driving, how hot or cold the car is and the petrol amount left in the car, some of the easier things I think is adequate to explain to him for now.

I go on to explain to him when mummy drives the car, say about 40, it means I'm covering 40km per hour, I go on to explain if mummy drives very fast when the road has speed limit then that is very dangerous and a big no-no.

I moved on to the temperature side, I asked him what letters are there, he said H (as in 'hah' and 'cah' phonics way). Then I explained H means Hot, C means Cold. If mummy's car indicate it is hot, then mummy gotta stop and cool down the car, it needs water and rest!

And lastly, on the petrol indicator side, I asked him what are the letters there, he said 'Ffffhhh' and 'Eehhh'. I explained to him F means Full while E means Empty.

Pretty easy and simple right? Just because they are kiddos and you think they might not understand mechanical stuff etc then you don't dare to teach them? Nooooo! Scale down to easier parts if you are worried they might not understand so much. You might missed an educational opportunity if you keep quiet right? Go on, give it a try the next time your kiddos hop into the car with you! ;)
