Sewing Project - Hand Towel

~ Posted on Friday, May 8, 2015 at 6:56 AM ~

I bought my first ever sewing macchine in April 2015, the Global Sewing Machine GSM-505. The first thing I tried to do using the sewing machine was to repair my hubby's torn pants and jeans, followed by my diaper bag and our toddler's rompers.

A few months earlier, I bought some bath towels and face towels in preparation to DIY something for our kiddos. I made the 1st one by hand and then I put the project on hold as I realised it would be so much better if done using a sewing machine and then I realised, I needed to learn some sewing skills!

So anyway, more on that project later. For this post, I'm just sharing my 1st mini sewing project, which is hand towels!

I have some remaining cloths from the face towel and decided to stitch up one end of it with color-coordinated ribbons as a hanger/hook. A very simple sewing project that gets me motivated to move on to tougher projects. From this mini project, I get to works out the kinks in my new sewing machine, how to thread faster, tried out different types of stitches, build up my sewing confidence and overcome my fear of using the sewing machine and more.

To end my post, I am very happy with my first mini project and hope to do more sewing stuff when time permits!

Teaching & Learning Moment - Learning Alphabets

~ Posted on Thursday, May 7, 2015 at 6:41 AM ~

I recently read about this from a book and decided to share this with you guys.

Put it simply, it means if your kiddo is learning ABCs with this method, he/she is creating unnecessary extra steps to remember them. Extra step in this case means, in order to learn and remember the letter A, they have to visualise or see the picture of an apple just so they can remember the letter 'A' or 'a'. Sample shown below:

Learning Alphabets

What the article tried to say is to teach our kiddos directly like this:

Learning Alphabets

I remembered going through the phonics song lessons and Jolly Phonics (taught in our kiddo's preschool) with our 1st and although the songs made it fun for kiddos to remember the letter sounds, I personally think now that it is creating unnecessary steps to remember if a child is being taught to recognise alphabets with the additional visual aids.

Teaching kiddos how to sound out the letters phonetically by using the phonics songs are fine with me but I think for alphabet recognition, it will be better to teach the simpler and direct method, which is just plainly showing the letters in uppercase and lowercase. I'm going to try the direct methods with our girls and see how it turns out.

Do share your thoughts on this!

Dinner - Before & After

~ Posted on Friday, May 1, 2015 at 6:48 AM ~

Last year, I wrote about a look back into my home-cooked journey so far. Then shortly before the end of 2014, I wrote a post on my preparation when cooking. Then I thought, "Why not snap a picture of before start cooking and the final results after cooking?"

So, here you go..

Top part of the picture is the ingredients all ready to be cooked on 23rd March 2015. From top left (clockwise): Chicken cut in small strips marinated in sweet soy sauce and sugar, broccoli cut into small florets, 3 eggs, pork marinated in sweet soy sauce, salt pepper and sugar, a bowl of curry powder + water + sugar + salt pepper, about 4-5 cloves of garlic cut into thin slices, a bowl of oyster sauce + water + soy sauce
